Social Skills: Tools for Life

Larissa Kaehn

Pacific Child Behavior Therapist

Tuesday, November 29, 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Social skills are pivotal and closely connected to a child's success within an inclusionary setting. On any given day, a child will make contact with family members, teachers, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, merchants, doctors, nurses, and peers. In order to function optimally, a child must develop a repertoire of diverse social behavior (e.g., both verbal and non-verbal communication that is contextually appropriate). While special needs may challenge a child's understanding of social skills, explicitly learning social skills is critically important. In consequence, teachers, parents, and therapists need to be familiar with effective strategies for teaching essential social behavior. Please join us for a free presentation ideal for parents and teachers that will focus on the tactics of integrating social skill instruction into play routines and the rituals and routines of daily life.

Participants will learn how to:

* Engage all developmental levels and skill sets during group activities

* Maximize play time while implementing behavior interventions

*Increase use of non-verbal directions

*Provide positive reinforcement and social referencing to modify behavior

* Enhance the quality and frequency of social interactions with peers
